Mississippi requires tattoo artists, body piercers, and permanent makeup artists to take a "Preventing Disease Transmission" course.

It is unlawful for any individual to perform tattooing and/or body piercing upon any person for compensation within the State of Mississippi without possessing a current and valid Certificate of Registration issued by the Mississippi Department of Health.

One of the requirements for obtaining a body art certificate of registration in Mississippi is to complete the American Red Cross course "Preventing Disease Transmission" or a similar course acceptable to the Department of Health.

In May 2012, the Mississippi State Department of Health, Bureau of Professional Licensure, approved Body Art Training Group's course, "Bloodborne Pathogens Training Infection Control, as a tattoo and body piercing "Disease Prevention Course".

Out-of-state artists attending a Mississippi tattoo convention or expo must also fulfill this training requirement in addition to the other requirements for a certificate of registration.

Body art practitioners may apply online for a certificate of registration by going to the website of the Mississippi State Department of Health, Professional Licensure Division.
