How to get a Minnesota tattoo license.

As a new applicant for a Minnesota Full Body Art Technician License, you must:

• Submit a copy of a current, legal ID showing you are 18 years of age or older
• Provide documentation that you have completed a certain number of hours of tattooing or a certain number of piercings:
  • body piercers must have completed 250 piercings under direct supervision and 250 piercings under indirect supervision
  • tattoo artists have completed 200 hours of supervised tattooing
• Submit a notarized affidavit from your supervisor that they supervised you during your temporary license period
• Submit a copy of your current bloodborne pathogens certificate
• Complete an application and pay a fee

Module 1 of this course covers what body artists need to know about the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the National Institute for Occupational Safety. After completing this module you should be able to:

• Explain why body art BBP training is required

Module 2 covers common diseases caused by bacteria and viruses.

After finishing this module you should be able to:

• Define MRSA, endocarditis, flesh-eating disease, impetigo, syphilis, TB, scabies, ringworm, herpes, shingles, molluscum, HIV, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C
• State their symptoms and incubation periods
• Explain how these diseases are identified, prevented, transmitted, and treated

Module 3 covers infection, disease, aseptic technique, and Chain of Infection. Every permanent cosmetics technician, tattoo artist, and piercer needs to have a basic understanding of the health risks associated with tattooing and piercing.

After finishing this BBP training module you should be able to:

• Name the links in the Chain of Infection
• Use the Chain of Infection to explain how to prevent infection from being spread from one person to another
• Identify potential links in the Chain of Infection where you work
• Analyze tasks
• Explain the importance of aseptic technique and how it is used to break the links in the Chain of Infection.

Module 4 teaches permanent cosmetics technicians, micro-blading technicians, body piercers, and tattoo artists how to do an exposure determination--the first step in developing an Exposure Control Plan.

This body art bloodborne pathogens training module also reviews Universal Precautions and Standard Precautions and helps body artists understand which level of precautions should be used when developing a tattoo shop Exposure Control Plan.

Module 5 teaches essential behaviors to prevent disease transmission such as:

• Using personal protective equipment
• Setup and teardown
• Performing hand hygiene
• Disposing of sharps and contaminated waste
• Using tattoo safety checklists
• Communicating hazards with labels, signs, and Safety Data Sheets
• Cleaning and sterilizing reusable instruments.
