FAQ
What is OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens Standard?
As a tattoo artist, permanent cosmetics artist, or body piercer, your work involves using needles and other sharp tools that may cause bleeding, exposing you to infectious pathogens such as HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C.
OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens Standard was created to safeguard workers like you from occupational exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials (OPIM).
Who Needs Annual Bloodborne Pathogens Training?
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) mandates that any employee who is at risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens as part of their job must receive BBP training. This includes tattoo artists, piercers, permanent makeup artists, and other body art professionals. In addition, any employee who has duties in a body art shop procedure area or a sterilization or decontamination room is also obligated to take BBP training.
Many states require all body art practitioners, both employees and independent contractors, to take BBP training.
Local jurisdictions such as cities and counties sometimes have their own safety regulations that body art practitioners must follow.
So, it's always smart to contact your local enforcement agency, such as the county health department, for guidance on what is required to legally perform body art.
Besides our Nationwide course, we also offer location-specific BBP courses:
California Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Training
Florida Bloodborne Pathogens and Communicable Diseases
Los Angeles Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Training
Minnesota Bloodborne Pathogens Infection Prevention Training
These courses are for tattoo artists, piercers, and permanent makeup artists who either work regularly in these locations or as temporary guest artists.
