Resources
There are many downloadable tattoo safety training guides, instructions, forms, and checklists in this online body art bloodborne pathogens training course. These materials can be printed and used during the class, or during in-shop safety training sessions. These downloadable materials include: Guide to the California Hazard Communications Regulations, Class Take-Away Notes, County of Los Angeles Body Art Practitioner Registration/Renewal Form, Guide to the Safe and Effective Use of Autoclaves, Permanent Cosmetics Machine Evaluation, Safety Data Sheets Training, Donning and Removing Gloves and Other Personal Protective Equipment, Set-Up and Tear-Down Procedures, Cleaning and Sterilization Flow-Chart, Informed Consent Form, Emergency Envelope Instructions and Forms, Equipment and Maintenance Log, and Client Health Questionnaire.

Regulations
BBP200 begins with a review of federal, state, and local regulations that address the health risks associated with tattooing, body piercing, branding, and permanent cosmetics. Inspectors from the Los Angeles Department of Public Health do conduct inspections of body art facilities and may suspend or revoke permits and registrations under specified conditions. Understanding and complying with Los Angeles County regulations is essential for all body art practitioners who work in the county.

Understanding Bloodborne Pathogens
The second part of this body art bloodborne pathogens training explains the transmission, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of infectious diseases such as hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV, MRSA, herpes, syphilis, endocarditis, and flesh-eating disease. Acquiring a basic understanding of these diseases is the first step in protecting everyone who enters a tattoo shop from infection and disease.

Chain of Infection
The third part explains the Chain of Infection model and the Chain’s six links: Pathogen, Reservoir/Source, Exit Portal, Route of Transmission, Entry Portal, and Susceptible Host. The Chain of Infection model can be used to set up appropriate strategies and procedures to prevent the spread of infection from one person to another. Skin anatomy and the body’s three lines of defense against infection are also covered in this part of the course.

Safety Plans
The fourth section of this bloodborne pathogens class deals with Universal Precautions and Standard Precautions and also covers Exposure Control Plans (ECP), Infection Prevention and Control Plans (IPCP) and Exposure Control and Infection Prevention Plans (ECIPP). An exposure determination exercise is provided in this BBP training module. Los Angeles County requires body art facilities to have a written IPCP. Cal/OSHA requires an ECP. Both plans can be combined into an ECIPP.

Methods of Compliance
The last section of this tattoo artist bloodborne pathogens certification course explains engineering controls, work practice controls, personal protective equipment (PPE), decontamination, sterilization, waste disposal, hepatitis B vaccinations, exposure incidents, post-exposure evaluation and follow-up, signs and labels, safety data sheet (SDS) training, informed consent, client aftercare instructions, and record keeping.

Final Exam
There is a final exam at the end of this online BBP training course. Once the final exam is passed, a body art bloodborne pathogens certificate of completion can be immediately printed.  If the certificate is lost, a replacement BBP certificate can be printed by signing in to the Virtual Classroom on the Your Training Place website and clicking on the “My Certificate” icon.

Validation
Another way to document that a course has been successfully completed is to use the Certificate Validation Tool on the Your Training Place website. Once the course certificate number has been entered, the Validation Tool will display the name of the person who took the course, the name of the BBP course, and the date the course was completed.

The Safe Body Art Act
Successful completion of this course will help tattoo artists, permanent cosmetics technicians, micro-blading technicians, body piercers, and branders who work in Los Angeles County become familiar with the provisions of Assembly Bill 300, the Safe Body Art Act.  AB 300, which became effective in 2012, superseded the Los Angeles County Body Art Ordinance in the unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County and the 14 cities where it was adopted. The County of Los Angeles enforces the Safe Body Art Act in all areas of Los Angeles County, except the cities of Long Beach, Pasadena, and Vernon. The Act requires all body art practitioners to annually register with the County, obtain annual bloodborne pathogen training, and meet other requirements.
