Body Art Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP) Course Approvals

Our BBP certification training for body art practitioners is approved or accepted in almost all states.

Here's a 50-state list that indicates the status of our courses.

Alabama

Alabama Public Health has approved Nationwide as a bloodborne pathogens training course for body artists who perform tattooing, body piercing, branding, and scarification. We are listed as "Online Bloodborne Pathogens Training Program".

Alaska

The State of Alaska Board of Barbers and Hairdressers has approved our Nationwide course for body art professionals who do tattooing, permanent cosmetic coloring, and body piercing. 

Arizona

There is no current Arizona state requirement for tattoo artists or piercers to take bloodborne pathogens training.

Coconino County, however, does require tattoo artists to take bloodborne pathogens training. Take our Nationwide course to fulfill this requirement.

Arkansas

The Body Art Program of the Arkansas Department of Health has approved our OSHA-compliant Bloodborne Pathogens Training for tattoo artists, permanent cosmetics artists, body piercers, and branders.

California

Body Art Training Group is a Los Angeles County-approved BBP trainer for body art practitioners. See Approved Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Training Providers.

All other California counties have approved, or accept, California Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Training.

How to register as a tattoo artist in California.

Colorado

The Denver Department of Environmental Health requires applicants for a body art license to submit an OSHA-compliant bloodborne pathogen training certificate (must be valid and taken within the past 12 months). Our Nationwide course is OSHA-compliant.

Connecticut

Nationwide complies with the bloodborne pathogens training requirements for tattoo technicians as specified in CT Gen Stat § 20-266o(b)(1)(B) (2013).

Delaware

Delaware does not currently require body art professionals to take bloodborne pathogens training. If your local Delaware health department has training requirements, determine if our OSHA-compliant Nationwide course will be accepted.

District of Columbia

The Code of the District of Columbia, § 47–2853.76c, requires body artists to have a certificate of completion of a course in bloodborne pathogens conferred by an institution or organization that is recognized by the Board or that the Board determines to be substantially equivalent thereof. Our Nationwide course is OSHA-compliant.

Florida

Our Florida course is approved by the Florida Department of Health under 381.00775(2)(b)4. and 5., F.S., and, Rule 64E-28.006, F.A.C.

Georgia

The Georgia Department of Public Health requires body artists to provide proof of successful completion of an OSHA-compliant Bloodborne Pathogen/Universal Precautions training program as one of the documents that must be submitted with an application for a Body Artist Certification.  Nationwide is an OSHA-compliant body art BBP course.

Hawaii

The State of Hawaii Department of Health, Sanitation Branch, has approved our online Nationwide course.

Idaho

The State of Idaho does not currently require tattoo artists or body piercers to take BBP training. Contact your local health department to determine if they have BBP training requirements for tattoo artists and piercers. If there are requirements, ask if Nationwide, an OSHA-compliant course, will be accepted.

Illinois

The Illinois Department of Public Health requires establishments providing body art services such as tattooing, piercing, branding or scarification to be registered with the Department.   The body art establishment holds the permit, not the individual artist. The artist, however, is required to provide proof of education including bloodborne pathogen training that meets OSHA standards.

Indiana

Our interactive Nationwide course meets the bloodborne pathogens training requirements as mentioned in "Quick Facts", Indiana State Department of Health.

Iowa

The State of Iowa requires body art practitioners to take bloodborne pathogens training. Choose our Nationwide course to meet this requirement.

Kansas

The Kansas Board of Cosmetology has approved our industry-specific Nationwide course for 3 hours.

Kentucky

Our Nationwide course complies with Kentucky's bloodborne pathogens training requirements as specified in 902 KAR 45:065 and 902 KAR 45:070.

Louisiana

The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals accepts our Nationwide class for bloodborne pathogens training for body art operators.

Maine

The Maine Department of Health and Human Services approved our skills-focused Nationwide course for body art bloodborne pathogens training.

Maryland

The Maryland Department of Health does not license tattoo and body piercing businesses. Allegany County and Calvert County, however, require tattoo artists and piercers to obtain proof of attendance at a bloodborne pathogens training program. Take our Nationwide course. Other Maryland counties or cities may have similar requirements. Always review the current licensing requirements of your local regulatory agency.

Our OSHA-compliant Nationwide Course is a course in the prevention of disease transmission and bloodborne pathogens as required by:

Michigan

The State of Michigan licenses body art facilities, not individual artists. Body art facilities, however, have to provide bloodborne pathogen training that is industry-specific and site-specific to anyone in the facility who has occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials. Minnesota

Minnesota Department of Health accepts our OSHA-compliant Nationwide course for 2 hours of bloodborne pathogens coursework for body art technicians. Our Minnesota course is accepted for 5 hours of coursework.

Mississippi

The Mississippi State Department of Health has approved our informative Nationwide course as a tattoo and body piercing "Disease Prevention Course".

Missouri

Our OSHA-compliant online Nationwide course complies with the bloodborne pathogens training requirements as specified by Missouri's Office of Tattooing, Body Piercing, and Branding.

Montana

Montana accepts our self-paced Nationwide course for body art bloodborne pathogens training.

Nebraska

The Nebraska Department of Health & Human Services accepts our OSHA-compliant Nationwide class as meeting the bloodborne pathogens training requirements for body artists.

Nevada

Our comprehensive Nationwide course complies with the bloodborne pathogens training requirements as specified by the  Southern Nevada Health District, and as specified in Washoe County Health District Regulations Governing Invasive Body Decoration Establishments, Section 030.006.

New Hampshire

Our user-friendly Nationwide course can be submitted to meet New Hampshire's requirement for microblading practitioners to take a Prevention of Disease Transmission and Bloodborne Pathogens course.

New Jersey

The State of New Jersey Department of Health accepts our career-oriented Nationwide course for body art bloodborne pathogens training.

How to Get Approved as a New Jersey Tattoo Artist

New Mexico

The New Mexico Board of Body Art Practitioners requires tattoo artists, permanent makeup professionals, body piercing professionals, and apprentices to take bloodborne pathogens training. Nationwide is a course that will satisfy this requirement.

New York

Even though New York State does not currently require bloodborne pathogens training for tattoo artists and piercers, some NY body art practitioners take our OSHA-compliant BBP courses because they want the specialized training or because they need a bloodborne pathogens certificate to do an out-of-state body art show.

North Carolina

Currently, North Carolina does not have a state requirement for body art professionals to take BBP training. If your local health department has training requirements, determine if our OSHA-compliant Nationwide course will be accepted.

North Dakota

There is no current North Dakota state requirement for tattoo artists or piercers to take BBP training. However, Western Plains Public Health District (Grant, Mercer, Morton, Oliver, and Sioux Counties), First District Health (Ward, Renville, McLean, McHenry, Bottineau, Burke, Sheridan, McLean Counties), the City and County of Grand Forks, and the Cities of Fargo and West Fargo do require body art practitioners to take bloodborne pathogens training.

Ohio

Our online-delivered Nationwide course complies with the bloodborne pathogens training requirements for body artists as specified in Ohio Administrative Code, Chapter 3701-9-04 (M)(3)(b).

Oklahoma

The Oklahoma State Department of Health accepts our online Nationwide class for bloodborne pathogens training certification for tattoo artists and body piercers.

Oregon

The Oregon Health Licensing Agency has approved our Nationwide course, "Bloodborne Pathogens and Infection Control Training" for 2 hours of continuing education credit for electrologists.

Oregon also recognizes our Nationwide course as meeting the criteria for bloodborne pathogen training certification needed by tattoo artists, PMU artists, and body piercers for initial licensure and renewal.

Pennsylvania

The Philadelphia Department of Public Health, Environmental Health Services accepts our convenient Nationwide course for body art bloodborne pathogens training.

Rhode Island

Our self paced Nationwide class complies with the bloodborne pathogens requirements as specified in the Rhode Island Dept. of Health Rules And Regulations For The Registration Of Tattoo Artists And Tattoo Parlors (Sept 2012). Section 16.1.b.

South Carolina

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control has approved our skill-enhancing Nationwide course for tattoo artists and body piercers.

South Dakota

The State of South Dakota does not require body art professionals to take BBP training.

The city of Sioux Falls, however, does require tattoo artists to take bloodborne pathogens training. 

Tennessee

The Tennessee Department of Health has stated the following classes are available to meet the requirements to receive a tattoo artist license or a body piercing technician license: 1) Knox County Health Department BBP class, 2) Shelby County Health Department BBP class, 3) Alliance of Professional Tattooists course in sterilization. Ask if our OSHA-compliant Nationwide course will be accepted.

Texas

The State of Texas currently licenses tattoo facilities, not individual artists. See Texas Bloodborne Pathogens Training for Tattoo Artists and Piercers. Some local jurisdictions, however, do require body artists to take BBP training.

Utah

There is no current Utah state requirement for body art professionals to take BBP training.

Contact your local health department to determine if they have BBP training requirements for tattoo artists and piercers. Ask if our OSHA-compliant Nationwide course will be accepted.

Vermont

Virginia

The Virginia Board for Barbers and Cosmetology has approved our industry-relevant Nationwide course for BBP training for tattoo artists and body piercers.

Washington

The Washington State Department of Licensing requires applicants for a body art license to have a current and active bloodborne pathogens certificate.  

Take our Nationwide course to fulfill this requirement.

West Virginia

The State of West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources has approved Nationwide as an Exposure Control Training course for body piercing technicians.

Wisconsin

The State of Wisconsin has no current requirement for body art professionals to take BBP training. Determine if there are requirements in the area in which you work. If there are, ask if an OSHA-compliant course like our Nationwide BBP course will be accepted.

Wyoming

The Cheyenne/Laramie County Health Department requires body artists to take bloodborne pathogens training. Take Nationwide to fulfill that requirement.

American Electrology Association

Nationwide has been approved by the American Electrology Association for .2 continuing education units.

Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals

Our California, Florida, Los Angeles, Minnesota, and Nationwide courses have been approved by the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals.
